Shanghai

Shanghai – The Oriental Pearl

Currently one of the most vibrant cities on the planet, Shanghai epitomizes the philosophy of “East meets West”. Vibrant, action packed, and awe inspiring – just some of the words to describe amazing Shanghai. The city makes you feel alive, a modern goliath with hundreds of sky scrapers on tip toe attempting to out do all others with architectural grandeur. Shanghai is China’s shop window and proof of the country’s recent economic miracle. Shanghai still preserves its colonial past with examples of ‘neo classical’ in the French Concession and along the Bund, so you will understand why it is often referred to as the ‘Paris of the East’. Enjoy sightseeing, shopping, cuisine and much more. Shanghai is a city that will thrill and amaze, offering a mix of old and new from traditional Pu Xi (West) to the bright lights of Pu Dong (East) – it will take your breath away!

There are a number of attractions that bring Western visitors from far and wide.

The Bund
Populated by the beautiful Art Deco buildings of the European, British and American banks that settled here in the 1930s, the Bund is the best way to experience the city’s colonial past. Situated on the banks of the Huang Pu river, there is something happening on the Bund every moment of the day; from locals doing tai chi in the early morning mist to families parading along the strip under the neon lights at night.

Nanjing Road
The most famous shopping road in a city full of shopping opportunities, Nanjing Road has long been considered China’s golden mile. Starting at the Bund, passing through People’s Square and finishing in the western suburbs 5 kms later, Nanjing Road has the lot; department stores, historic buildings and restaurants galore.

Shanghai Museum
Situated in People’s Park, Shanghai Museum is one of the finest museums in China. Housed over 4 levels, each of the 16 rooms focuses on a different part of China’s vast history: calligraphy, Ming furniture, ethnic costumes, bronze sculptures, coins pottery etc.

Shanghai’s development has been meticulously planned for decades to come, you can see it all with an incredible scale model of the city, now and in the future. French Concession

France or China – or perhaps a hint of both, this is the impression you will get when you visit this leafy and quiet district. The streets are flanked with trees from the middle of the 19th century when this area was developed very much with thoughts of Paris rather than Beijing. Streets, Houses and most significantly the Catholic St Ignatius Cathedral, will offer an insight to a time when Shanghai was a different city with different influence than it has today.

Xintiandi
Translating as ‘New Earth’ Xintiandi is a vibrant area of central Shanghai filled with up market bars, cafes and restaurants. The setting is within traditional Shikumen Houses (Stone Gate houses) threaded through narrow alley ways. Although you are in the heart of the new China, the flavour is very international.

Yu Yuan Gardens
Once you’ve entered into the grounds of this 500 year old classical Chinese garden, you’ll instantly forget that you are surrounded by a city of 18 million people. Employing the four traditional concepts of water, building, rocks and plants, the Yu Yuan Gardens are a fine example of Ming garden design and are one of Shanghai’s premier sights. Surrounding the gardens is the popular Yu Yuan bazaar, which showcases the beautiful designs of Shanghai’s ancient houses.

Jade Buddha Temple
Still an active Buddhist temple today , the Jade Buddha Temple dates back to the turn of the 20th Century. See the reclining Buddha. Enjoy a Vegetarian Lunch on site.

Bund Sightseeing Tunnel

The Bund Sightseeing Tunnel joins the East and West of the River. Travel by cable car with bright lights and modern music.
